Whitsundays FAQs

Are the Whitsundays worth visiting?

The stunning Whitsunday Islands are full of incredible sights. From the pure white sand of Whitehaven Beach to the mesmerising blues of Hill Inlet, you’re in for a memorable experience.

When is the best time to visit the Whitsundays?

If we had to narrow it right down, we’d say September and October are the best months to visit the Whitsundays, although between May and October generally offers ideal conditions. The weather is warm, with lower humidity and less rain than summer, and temperatures range from 23°C to 28°C – perfect for activities like sailing and snorkelling. This period also offers stinger-free swimming and calm seas, ideal for exploring the islands. You might even spot migrating humpback whales between June and September. While November to April isn’t a bad time to visit, the weather is hotter, the humidity is higher, there’s a risk of tropical storms, and higher stinger risks in the water.

What is the best way to get from Airlie Beach to Whitehaven Beach?

The best way to get from Airlie Beach to Whitehaven Beach is by boat. As Whitehaven Beach is one of the must-visit spots in the Whitsundays, nearly all Whitsundays day trips and overnight tours include a stop here. You can also take a seaplane or helicopter, which is a faster but more expensive option.

Are the Whitsundays in the Great Barrier Reef?

Yes, the Whitsunday Islands are located in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, and it’s their proximity to the Great Barrier Reef that makes them one of the best places to visit in Australia. Most Whitsundays day trips and boat tours include snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef, and a Whitsundays scenic flight is the perfect way to see the famous Heart Reef from above.
